Finnish Extreme Metal Band Anzillu are set to release their debut album on January 27th. Anzillu’s guitarist Jesse Kämäräinen took the time to talk with Metal Express Radio about the band’s first album, the formation of Anzillu, plans for 2023, and more. Check out the chat below!
Metal Express Radio: Anzillu’s debut album entitled Ex Nihilo is set to be released on January 27th, what can you tell fans about the upcoming album?
Kämäräinen: The album is a product of long planning and hardship. Although it’s the band’s debut, it’s my third as a songwriter and I took everything I learned from the previous two albums, amped it up to eleven and went for it. I think the results will talk for themselves. Music wise it’s a cocktail of various genres with great production. We didn’t want to lock ourselves in one particular genre, hopefully the listeners will find our blend.
MER: How was it writing and recording as a band for the first time?
Kämäräinen: Taking advantage of our previous recording sessions in different bands we could bring more to the table. I had worked with Nino Laurenne before and knew how he worked, so the process was very smooth and we got it like we wanted. Everything was in schedule and sounded like it should. It was a very rewarding and easy session.
MER: How did the formation of the band come about?
Kämäräinen: My previous band Inkvisitor was in the midst of writing our third album but it broke up unexpectedly and in a nasty way. I immediately wanted to continue, so I put up some ads to form a new band while also finishing the songs in the meantime. Half of the songs you hear on this album were supposed to be Inkvisitor songs, but now they form a basis for Anzillu. They were too good to be wasted.
MER: The band has released four different singles from the album, what kind of feedback have you received?
Kämäräinen: There will be one last single released when the album drops, it’s the best one in my book. The feedback has been very positive. We are looking forward to hear what they think about the whole album.
MER: Do you feel like those four songs give fans an idea on what to expect from the full album?
Kämäräinen: Somewhat yeah, but there will be some unexpected turns on the album that they don’t see coming.
MER: What are the band’s plans for 2023?
Kämäräinen: To do as many shows as possible and hopefully starting to write new stuff too.
MER: Who do you hope to tour with?
Kämäräinen: Gojira would be super cool. I think we would fit Kreator and Exodus bills too very nicely.
MER: Is there anywhere that you’re looking forward to playing live first and why?
Kämäräinen: Tavastia in Finland would be great place to play again, hopefully it happens soon. Also many of the festivals we have here. And Europe in general.
MER: What are your hopes for the band’s future?
Kämäräinen: To do another album and hopefully a European tour supporting some cool bands. To see the band grow.
MER: What message do you hope to deliver with the band’s music?
Kämäräinen: A message full of energy and that the Metal ain’t dead yet.
