Swedish Technical Metalcore band Aviana have just released their new album entitled Corporation. The band’s frontman Joel Holmqvist took the time to talk with Metal Express Radio about the new album, playing open air festivals versus playing clubs, the Metal scene in Sweden, and more. Metal Express Radio: The band’s new album entitled Corporation was recently released on September 30th, how does it feel to have the album done and out?
Holmqvist: It’s a relief for sure. We’ve been sitting on those songs for a long time and since we decided to release the album bit by bit thanks to the pandemic, it’s such a good feeling having the songs out together now.
MER: What kind of feedback have you been able to receive on the new album so far?
Holmqvist: It’s been overwhelming to be honest. We knew that we were working on some great songs but never thought the hype about the album would be this big. It’s super cool to see.
MER: How was the writing and recording process?
Holmqvist: We made demos for 6-7 songs relatively fast. Most of them were just me playing with my vocal range and to see what felt right. And since there was a pandemic raging, the recording process was done in my home studio. Which was a new experience for sure, haha.
MER: What is one song off Corporation you would suggest someone to check out first and why?
Holmqvist: Either “Obsession” or “Anomaly.” “Obsession” kind of showcases the middle ground of the whole album. Not too hard, not too soft. Anomaly for being a very easy listen.
MER: What do you see as plans for the band for the rest of the year?
Holmqvist: Touring as much as possible, we’ve been cooped up for way too long. Since the album still is super fresh we have to tour it and we’ve really missed being on the road. Seeing fans and just being able to hang out with other bands and friends again is great.
MER: Who do you hope to tour with that you haven’t yet and why?
Holmqvist: I’m really into Bad Omens latest album. So it would be cool to hear that live for a few nights, haha. Other than them I think Architects would be fun to tour with. Loving the new direction they’re headed towards.
MER: How would you describe the Metal scene in Sweden?
Holmqvist: Band wise; incredible at the moment. There are so many talented musicians popping out of nowhere in Sweden. Touring wise; isn’t really a thing anymore. It might sound weird but that’s the case. Bands play in Stockholm & Gothenburg and that’s pretty much it. We tried giving a small Sweden tour a go before the summer and got surprised how good it was though. So the scene might just wake up again.
MER: What are your thoughts on playing open air festivals versus playing in a club?
Holmqvist: Open air festivals are so much fun. Not only the actual show, but the whole experience. However I’ll always prefer club shows. There’s a different connection to the audience in clubs. Actually being able to see, hear and connect with the crowd more closely is such a great feeling.
MER: What have been some of your favorite albums of 2022?
Holmqvist: The Death of Piece of Mind by Bad Omens, Nigh to Silence by ERRA and I’m waiting for the VV album to be released. The vocalist of HIM started a solo project and I’m here for it.
