Three Times a Charm

Staying true to their concept and goal to pay tribute to 80s metal legends, Freaks And Clowns have completed their 3rd album in as many years and with the release of We Set the World On Fire, they are one notch closer to perfecting that goal. The band was founded by drummer Johan Lindstedt (Astral Doors) and singer Christer Wahlgren after the two met in a studio in Borlänge to exchange a few song ideas in 2017. Together they decided that influences of Classic Heavy Metal paired with modern sounds would be the path they wanted to take as a band. Bringing in members of Astral Doors bassist Ulf Lagerström and guitarist Mats Gesar made complete sense, with guitarist Mathias Henrysson (Chainwreck, ex-Cudfish) completing the solid lineup.

Full Throttle

Freaks and Clowns – We Set the World On Fire offers us 13 hard hitting songs that harken back to the early days of 80s Heavy Metal. Singer Christer Wahlgren is full blast right up until the last track, with vocals that remind of Blackie Lawless (Wasp) to Udo Dirkschneider (ex-Accept, U.D.O.), and even Tom Keifer (Cinderella) at times. The songs are all very driving, with a thumping rhythm section and twin guitars to deliver the goods. Lots of hooks, with big in-your-face choruses to bang your head to song after song make this album a good listen.

Final Notes

Freaks and Clowns have done a good job of making Heavy Metal that brings us back to the early days of the 80s, and in so doing gives us something to enjoy that’s new and old at the same time. Minor gripe: tracks 3 and 4 have the same tempo, beat and key, so maybe the order could have been a little better, but that’s what the shuffle button is for. With over 56 minutes of driving metal, We Set the World On Fire is a fine 3rd album, and a great raunchy Heavy Metal album to have in your collection.
