The Backstory

Primal Instinct is the six instrumental album by Italian guitar shredder Francesco Fareri. Fareri also heads up instruction at the Total Guitar Academy.

The Album

“Primal Instinct” prepares you for the background music that appears throughout the album; Hardcore Metal pounding double kick drums and bass. On the guitar side, Fareri only gives you a taste of the fiery licks and solos that lie ahead. With “Triumph” Francesco is joined by Baby Metal and Marty Friedman touring guitarist Takayoshi Ohmura. Together they focus on the melodic side of the guitar. “Black Box” plays out like it could have lyrics written to it.

Japanese virtuoso Syu dukes it out with Francesco on the electrifying “Human Genesys.” The two axmen lean heavy on the Yngwie Malmsteen style arpeggio runs while competing to see who can play the the fastest. Fellow shred guitar instructor Rusty Cooley gets in on the fun with “Damnation Game.” There will clearly be no definitive winner in this chess game.

The Verdict

Primal Instinct is quite the guitar virtuoso masturbatory show. Francesco Fareri is the ruler of his instrument, there’s no doubt about that. There is not a great deal of diversity on Primal Instinct, but there are more fast guitars, thunderous drums, and phrygian dominant scales than you can handle.
