Dark Revolution is the latest release from NWOBHM veterans Tokyo Blade. Formed in 1978, the band went through a series of names and lineup changes until the early ’80s when they released their debut. The current line up features an array of past members spanning the band’s career, including Andy Boulton – lead guitar (1982–present), John Wiggins – rhythm guitar (1983-1986; 2010–present), Andy Wrighton – bass guitar (1984-1986; 2010–present), Steve Pierce – drums (1982-1986; 1987; 2010–present) and Alan Marsh – lead vocals (1982-1984; 1990-1991; 1995-1996; 2016-present).

Dark Revolution is very much a NWOBHM record. The record kicks off with “Story Of A Nobody”, a hard-driving rocker with a big hook chorus, angst-ridden lyrics, pounding drums, and screaming guitars. Track 2 is “Buring Rain”, another rocker with twin guitars and a big chorus, with more intricate guitar work. “Crack In The Glass” is another very good track. There aren’t any filler tracks on Dark Revelation. There aren’t any slow songs either. Just 11 balls to the wall NWOBHM anthems.

Overall, Dark Revolution is a good record. The production is modern sounding without sacrificing traditional NWOBHM aesthetics. The songs are well written, and the performances are strong. There isn’t necessarily any new ground being broken here, but it is definitely a solid record. Fans of NWOBHM, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and fans of Tokyo Blade will enjoy Dark Revolution.
