( vote)If you love 80s metal, the sound of Marshall amplifiers, and beautiful women in denim and leather, then the Burning Witches are a dream come true. This Swiss all-female band really cooks with fire on their 3rd album Dance with the Devil. It’s not often these days that you hear a new album that at once sounds familiar, and yet sounds new and full of surprises. These 5 women from Switzerland have a sound that takes you back to the days of early Ratt, Mötley Crüe, W.A.S.P., Megadeth and Accept, and they do it with such energy and emotion that it all sounds fresh.
On Fire
The addition of new vocalist Laura Guldemond puts Burning Witches over the top. She can sing soulful melodies, and then scream like a banshee from Hell. The first track “Lucid Nightmare” kicks us in the teeth with a fast paced, riff heavy screamer that shows great range for Guldemond. Moments of this song instantly remind you of the heyday of Thrash Metal, making the urge to bang your head almost impossible to resist.
The title cut “Dance with the Devil” is really catchy, and the riffs would be right at home on any Ratt album. This song has a charm to it that almost feels like a guilty pleasure, with it’s straight ahead punchy riffs, and chorus that makes you just want to join in on and sing along. The production values are fantastic, making this tune sound like a million dollars. We want more!
Wings of Steel
The next track is another fast paced instant classic that combines lots of double bass with haunting vocal harmonies and kick ass riffs titled “Wings of Steel”. When the guitar opens this ripper of a song, you feel the 80s Thrash Metal boiling in your blood. “Six Feet Underground” continues in the same fashion, with more great Metal that sounds so familiar and yet so new. The album also includes a great version of Manowar’s “Battle Hymn” with Ross the Boss joining in, and Michael Lepond of Symphony X also joining in on the fun.
2 Devil Horns up
Every cut on this album has something great to offer the metal head in us all. From the soulful ballad “Black Magic” that reminds us of The Scorpions to the Judas Priest like “Sea of Lies”, Dance with the Devil has all that and more going for it. If you haven’t yet heard these Metal maidens, then don your denim and leather, and get your fist in the air for the Burning Witches.
