( votes)Although they have a history dating back to the early ’70s their 1973 recorded debut album only saw the light of day as Rebirth in 2006, over 30 years since it was recorded, becoming something of a recently uncovered time capsule of a long-forgotten era. Second album 13th Hour, followed soon afterwards.
With Consortium, who had an extensive touring resume behind them were now officially released recording artists and it was at this point that film director Chris Ray picked up “It’s Not Easy” to include as the soundtrack to his And Now Transworld Skate video and this in turn has brought the previously forgotten band to the attention of a new generation with the release of a special 7” release to mark this event.
“It’s Not Easy” with its bubbling bass line and sparkling guitar melody before the riff kicks in big time, lays the foundation to the Brian Connolly like vocals of Brian Parker. The Sweet comparisons hold further in the multi layered vocals in the chorus. Obviously, the sound is quintessentially 1970s and that’s a good thing.
B-side to the single “Evolution”, is even better. Imagine a collision of Wishbone Ash, Uriah Heep with a smidgeon of Jethro Tull and you’ll not be too far off the mark, as it’s mid-paced dark, foreboding riff hints at what could have been if the album had been released and promoted at the time. Well it’s better late than never, as they say, to grab a bit of Consortium.
