( votes)David Reece has had a long and storied career in Rock and Roll. Reece debuted as Accept’s new vocalist on their 1989 album Eat the Heat. It’s not easy to please fans when longtime members are replaced, and Accept’s new sound was met with mixed reviews. On its own (and perhaps under a different band name) Eat the Heat is a solid Metal album. Reece moved on to form Bangalore Choir and released On Target in 1992. The music scene had gone to Grunge, but Reece was at his best on this lost gem. Through the years Reece has fronted numerous bands such as Tango Down and Bonfire and he’s even released a few solo albums along the way. His latest solo album Cacophony of Souls has Reece teaming up with ex-U.D.O. guitarist Andy Susemihl.
“Chasing The Shadows” sets the tone with Susemihl’s heavy guitars and Reece’s weathered yet powerful vocals. The song is a leftover track from a previous album the duo worked on. “Blood On Our Hands” is a hard-charging track that delves into the current politics of the world and how they’ve been the same way since the beginning of time. Susemihl lays down a blistering, yet melodic solo at the break. The album’s title track “Cacophony of Souls” is kind of silly to say. Looking at the word cacophony, it’s difficult to pronounce. Once the track gets going you forget about all that. Vocally Reece is a bit of a split personality. Half of the time he’s deep and ominous and answers back high range and melodic. Once the catchy chorus gets going the title is stuck in your head all day.
Malte Frederik Burkert’s bass work is front and center on “Collective Anesthesia.” “Metal Voice” was written for the Canadian-based YouTube channel The Metal Voice and is a nod to Reece’s Accept days. The riffs are crunchy and the call-and-response chorus is sure to get the live crowds joining in. Reece is in his best voice on the acoustic ballad “Another Life Another Time.” Drummer Andrea Gianangeli provides a unique background beat that you can’t ignore. Reece came up with the title after trying to talk with his wife on a crowded plane heading to Bulgaria. They couldn’t hear each other when his wife uttered the title. Reece vents his frustrations about the music industry on “Over and Over” with bluesy, soulful vocals, while Susemihl and Burkert trade licks and solos. “Back in the Days” pays homage to Reece’s Bangalore Choir days. It’s about youth, no cares, no responsibilities, and just living for the music. “Bleed” is Reece’s rallying call for fighting for what you believe in.
Sometimes the best Rock albums are in the places you least expect. David Reece is firing on all cylinders on Cacophony of Souls. His partner in crime Andy Susemihl lays the musical groundwork while Reece delivers impassioned tales of a life long lived.
