( votes)The Revenant is the debut solo project from Paraguayan keyboardist and composer Adrian Benegas. Best known as founder of Paraguayan Symphonic Metal/ Progressive Metal band Tragul, Benegas recruited a number of world-renowned musicians as contributors to this project including Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), Herbie Langhans (Avantasia), Henning Basse (Firewind), Zuberoa Aznarez (Diabulus in Musica, Tragul) together with a base lineup from Paraguay that includes Sebastian Ramirez (drums) and Diego Bogarín (guitar and bass).
Benegas himself takes credit for the composition and production of The Revenant. The record is full of spotless performances, and the production is loud and clear, almost to the point of sterility. The pace of the music is relentless, with pounding double bass almost throughout, witht eh exceptions of “A Change Of Heart” which is only keys and vocals, and “The Light Of My Dreams” which actually breathes a little and allows the song to groove some.
The majority of the rest of the material is full speed, rushing headlong. A few of the vocal melodies seem to conflict with the very full arrangements, almost as if too many things are happening at once musically and causing a cluttered feel, but otherwise, a solid release. Fans of Primal Fear, Avantasia, Helloween, and Tragul will want to check this out.
