TURBOKILL – Vice World

Vice World is the debut full-length album from German Heavy Metal band Turbokill. Formed by former Alpha Tiger vocalist Stephan Dietrich, and includes the talents of Ronny Schuster (rhythm guitar), Daniel Kanzler (lead guitar), Marco “Fox” Grünwald (bass), and Philipp “Nafta“ Dießl (drums). Turbokill has an unmistakable Judas Priest influence, and while their bio proclaims them the musical successors to Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, such claims are a bit unfounded.

Vice World is pretty good. Dietrich has a great range, and the band is solid. The production leaves a bit to be desired. The vocals are loud and clear, almost tot the point of harshness, while the rest of the mix is a bit muddier. Some of the choices are a bit risky like the china cymbal starkly clashing in the left ear instead of seated in the mix properly.

Comparing this record to last year’s Priest release (Firepower), Turbokill says they have taken a page from that book. While the influence is evident, there really is no comparison. The production falls well short of that lofty assertion. That said, Vice World is a decent record from an up and coming Metal band that is worth checking out, especially for fans of Priest and Iron Maiden, and fans of NWOBHM music.
