( votes)Sweden’s Prime Creation describe themselves as experienced musicians and their sound as hard-driving Melodic Heavy Metal. Their sophomore release stumbles at the outset but recovers to validate both of these statements.
“Fingers Crossed” opens the album with an explosion of up tempo crunching riffs but implodes when the overdriven vocal track joins the mix in cringe worthy fashion. It sounds as if the vocal recording level was too high resulting in distortion. If this was done on purpose, it’s a shame because it derails what is otherwise a great song. Fortunately, this problem doesn’t resurface in later tracks.
“Lost In The Shades” and “Before The Rain” are a pair of outstanding tracks that highlight musicianship and song writing skills. Both songs burst with melody, soaring choruses and scorching riffs. These two songs hold their own with best the genre has to offer.
From these frenzied peaks the tracks dial down the intensity. While by no means sedate, the middle of the album features work of less complexity. On the basis of sheer menace, “Tears Of Rage” stands out among these later tracks. Gritty and doom laden riffing is pitched against equally powerful vocal storytelling to great effect. The album exits with a track that is curious blend of ballad and atmospheric art. Heavy on swirling keyboards, subtle percussion and soaring vocals, it’s a mixture that works surprisingly well.
With the exception of the shaky opening track, Tears Of Rage delivers modern hard-driving Metal as intended. It’s very consistent and contains highlights that Melodic Metal fans will surely enjoy.
