The Melvins once again blew the lid off The Urban Lounge September 17th, 2019 during their “Escape from L.A.” tour stop in Salt Lake City. Appearing this time as the normal trio, the hard hitting sound of Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and guest bassist Steven McDonald took the stage and hammered nonstop through a 18 song setlist. The band took the stage and exploded in to “Sesame Street Meat” from the 2014 album Hold it in followed by “The Kicking Machine” and “Anaconda”.
With the crowd all fired up and the mosh pit already in full swing, the band continued the butt kicking with “Queen” from the 1994 album Stoner Witch which is one of my favorite albums of all time. “It’s Shoved” and “Oven” followed, along with a great “Malfunkshun” cover of “With Yo’ Heart, Not Yo’ Hands”. Even knowing the Melvins have an extensive music library, they really surprised me by playing “Billy Fish” from their 2008 album Nude With Boots, which sounded incredible live.
More on the plate for the evening was “Charlie” a “Redd Kross” cover, Civilized Worm, and always the fans favorite “Hooch” and “Honey Bucket” from the 1993 Houdini album. You could not have asked for a better Encore to end the night festivities. The Melvins, along with the night’s opening band Redd Kross took the stage together performing “Standing in Front of Poseur” and a cover of Kiss’s “Deuce”.
Again the Melvins put on an incredible show, can’t wait for their return next year.
