Are We Soldiers is the latest release from Australian Progressive Metal band Teramaze. Formed in 1993 by then teen aged guitarist Dean Wells, the group has had a host of members, with Are We Soldiers featuring the return of vocalist Brett Rerekura, along with newly added guitarist Chris Zoupa, bassist Andrew Cameron, drummer Nick Ross and keyboardist Jonah Weingarten. The record is a long one, almost an hour and 10 minutes, with 10 tracks ranging in length from over five minutes to almost 12 minutes each. The band manages to tastefully incorporate a number of stylistically interesting elements to their sound, without straying too far out side the Progressive Metal label.

While Teramaze is self described as Prog Metal with Pop Choruses, The Progressive elements aren’t overpowering, and the chops laden songs are filled with tight, precise performances across the board. The opening and titular track “Are We Soldiers” is almost a straight forward Metal song, with some of the more Progressive elements being showcase later in the record, particularity in “The One Percent Disarm”, which demonstrates a clear nod to Dream Theater. There is no weak material here, especially for longtime fans of Teramaze. Fans of Dream Theater, Progressive Metal, Pop Metal, and Metal will definitely find something to enjoy on Are We Soldiers.
