AXEL RUDI PELL – XXX Anniversary Live

This double disc, live release captures an excellent cross-section of Axel Rudi Pell’s remarkably consistent career. XXX Anniversary Live was recorded during 2014, spanning several shows in Europe. Pell, as a titan of German Classic Metal, has continued to carry the torch for unapologetic, unfiltered, traditional heavy metal. Featuring Johnny Gioeli on lead vocals, this collection of live tracks is well performed, if at times lacking in production quality.

On most of the tracks, the vocals have a very compressed, almost clipping sound to them, as if Gioeli is cupping the microphone. This seems to have been somewhat dealt with in the mix though, and helps lend some credibility to a modern day live release. The band, overall, sounds tight and pounding, but still organic.

Although XXX Anniversary Live is really only going to find an audience with existing A.R.P. fans, those who do take the plunge into this veteran act’s history will be rewarded with heaps of diamond platted, tempered sonic steel.
