( vote)Although Hidden Lapse’s Butterflies is excellent in many ways, there is a certain key ingredient missing that would make this a genuinely great record. Stylistically, the band has modern, proggy yet accessible sound that many listeners should find appealing. The album production is crisp and punchy, although a bit sterile sounding at times, and nothing sounds out of place in the mix or arrangements. Despite those impressive attributes, many of the songs on this album seem to lack a memorable quality. Butterflies is simultaneously impressive and forgettable. Perhaps this is simply a problem of there being too many great bands that already do this style. Regardless of the reasoning, Butterflies is a frustratingly anti-climactic ride.
All that being said, listeners who don’t need singalong ear candy will probably still enjoy this release. Fans of Edenbridge and the poppier Nightwish material will find some familiar vibes that they can jam to.
