Rival Sons’ tour supporting their sixth studio album Feral Roots made a mid-week stop in Minneapolis at the storied concert venue First Avenue. Reviews of Feral Roots are positive mostly citing the variety of song styles and the maturation of the band’s sound. It’s obvious the band thinks highly of the release; eight of the 15 song setlist are from it.
After setting the crowd on fire with four rousing, spirited songs of Heavy Rock, the band dampened the mood with a half hour plus set of songs featuring meandering blues, complete with acoustic guitars and emotive crooning. Apparently, this is the “mature” part of the set. It drained the crowd energy faster than an opposing team scoring on the home team in the first minute of a play. From there, the band slowly built momentum ultimately closing with “Keep On Swinging.”
Huge fans of Feral Roots will find this show especially satisfying. Fans of material from Rival Sons’ first five albums will be disappointed realizing they omit “Secret”, “Get What’s Coming”, “Burn Down Los Angeles”, and “You Want To”. Set list lamentations aside, the band played well, their sound board crew ensured a professional mix, and it was a fine way to spend a week night.
