Headbanging Forever is the seventh release from Italian Groove/Thrash Metal band Extrema. The band was founded in 1985 in Milan, Italy by guitarist Tommy Masara, and currently features bassist Gabri Giovanna and drummer Francesco “Frullo” Larosa. Extrema have declared Headbanging Forever a true expression of repressed creativity, due in large part to the addition of new vocalist Tiziano Spigo. In truth, even a label as seemingly diverse as Groove/Thrash Metal does not adequately represent the sonic content of the record. While Thrash elements are present, the Melodic content, the Progressive elements, and the diversity of the music even within the genre is impressive.

Spigno’s vocals, while guttural and suited to thrash, have a surprisingly melodic quality and impressive range, at times even implying melody not present in the underlying music. Check out “Heaven’s Blind” for some of this. Larosa’s drumming is equally impressive throughout, as he seamlessly weaves between Thrash, Progressive, and Groove Metal themes. Check out how “Pitch Black Eyes” showcases stylistic diversity within one song. Headbanging Forever is 10 tracks of well produced, stylistically aggressive, genre bending Metal music. Good songwriting, excellent performances, and boundary challenging choices really make this record a must listen for any serious metal fan.
