( votes)Distance Over Time is the 14th full length release from legendary American Progressive Metal Band Dream Theater. The band sequestered themselves for four months in upstate New York at Yonderbarn Studios, living and working together 24/7 until the record was complete. They have not used this approach in 20 years and, as a result of this process, Distance Over Time is an absolute triumph for longtime fans, particularly those of the Awake era. Outstanding production, outstanding material, and of course, outstanding performances make Distance Over Time everything Dream Theater fans have come to expect, but there is a musical chemistry that is not always present on some of their later works. Emotional, poignant and thematic lyrics and musical emoting give this album a weight that few artists can deliver.
Particularly “Barstool Warrior”, and “At Wits End” deliver on a truly evocative level. Riff heavy, technically proficient, and well written songs, full of the keyboard/guitar call and response and harmony lines the listener comes to expect from Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci, James LaBrie’s unmistakable vocal delivery (though to be fair, he is mixed back just a bit) John Myung’s intricate bass lines (mixed a little more prominently than usual, and it works well) and Mike Mangini’s technical drumming (and lyrical contibution for the first time in “Room 137”) all deliver powerfully, and never get off into the weeds of too much. Distance Over Time is a contender, both for the best of 2019, and the best from Dream Theater in decades.
