( vote)The Ghost Ward Diaries from Sweden’s Electric Boys opens up with “Hangover In Hannover”, a hard charging rocker warning of the evils of alcohol (ha), instantly calling to mind kindred spirits Junkyard in subject matter and tone (check the riff and then listen to Junkyard’s “Staredown”). The song, with its catchy sing-along chorus and no quarter attitude is a great intro to Electric Boys’ confident brand of sleazy Hard Rock. But while that sound is their lead punch, they keep things interesting by incorporating other styles and flavors. “Knocked Out By Tyson” has a bit of a funky groove to go along with a riff that hits as hard as Iron Mike, adding a female voice to the chorus to cushion the blow just enough. “One Of The Fallen Angels” ends with an effectively ominous, almost Western-sounding instrumental break paired with a spectral choir that conjures a vision of one of the titular angels on his or her way down.
Repurposed riffs or not, The Ghost Ward Diaries is one of the strongest releases in the growing Electric Boys catalogue; there’s a real sense of fun pervading every track, from the rollicking instrumental “Swampmotofrog” to the cheeky “First The Money, Then The Honey” and everything in between. This is one of those albums you’ll want to blast as soon as you get out of work on a Friday night, one that will put you in the right mental headspace all through the weekend.
It might be good enough to get you halfway through a crap Monday, even.
