( vote)Grimorium Verum is Spanish act Witchfyre’s full-length debut, which follows the band’s 2013 EP Banshee, and another EP, Legends, Rites and Witchcraft, in 2014. This new release was actually recorded in 2016 but was held for two years while the band made the appropriate arrangements with their new record label, Fighter Records.
This album is Classic Heavy Metal with some nice New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Speed Metal influences. Fans of Grim Reaper, RIOT, Judas Priest, and Attick Demons will enjoy this. That being said, Witchfyre’s efforts don’t quiet measure up to those aforementioned bands. While there are some pleasantly evil lyrical themes, and the album production is good for the style, some inconsistent vocal performances and underwhelming guitar parts make this release, at times, hard to listen to. The difficulty that some singers have of singing in a language which they may not fully understand is very apparent here, and there are often times when the vocal delivery becomes incomprehensible. This is rare for a European band. The songs might actually be more enjoyable, even for English speakers, if they were sung in Spanish.
The various missteps aside, Grimorium Verum is still an enjoyable album, but considering how many great bands there are already doing this style, it will be very difficult for Witchfyre to stand tall among their peers if this is the best they can do.
