( votes)New York City based Industrial act Jane In Space presents us with a new, six track EP entitled Gorerunner. Although the technical abilities of Jane In Space are obvious, this release lacks any sort of artistic direction or focus, and has the sound of a band that has yet to decide what it wants to do. Gorerunner‘s tracks range from late 90s Industrial Metal pounders like “Through The Veins” and “Little Raurus”, to EDM laced recording experiments like “Eat Your Face”. Gorerunner even gets a bit sentimental with the Pop Rock ballad “Breaking Glass”, which, on its own, is quite nice but seems blatantly out of place when heard in the larger context of the EP. This captures the overall stance of the release: A collection of solid but unrelated songs.
Like the songwriting, the production techniques on Gorerunner are inconsistent. That’s not to say that they’re bad, but this album sounds as if multi-instrumentalist and album producer Jesse Jensen got his hands on the world’s largest sample library and dove headfirst into his laptop over a cocaine fueled, 3-day weekend. Clearly, while there is a lot to admire on this release, an honest refocusing and sense of commitment to a particular sound would do wonders for Jane In Space. All that being said, fans of independent music with an Industrial flavor and no stylistic inhibitions will probably enjoy this EP.
