( votes)Krull’s debut album is 20 years in the making. The Brazilian band formed in 1998 as Eternal Fate. They rebranded as Krull in 2015 delivering 80s era Heavy Metal with “…”The Black Coast,” a concept album, based on and inspired by the tales of Robert E. Howard, master of Sword & Sorcery” (Creator of the fictional characters: Conan the Barbarian, Kull the Conqueror, Solomon Kane, among others).” Unfortunately, 20 years is neither long enough to create compelling concept music nor find a production team to properly mix it.
After lurching through a baffling atmospheric intro track of howls, roars, random keyboards and croaking voices, “The Witch” takes off at flying-broom speed. It’s at this point the listener notices the woefully thin and distracting mix. The Speed Metal continues for another couple songs with moments of decent guitar work overshadowed by bad vocals which alternate between poor imitations of King Diamond and Johan Hegg of Amon Amarth. If you remain hopeful for redeeming value, you will be crushed by “Valhalla” a plodding ballad which exposes the vocalist’s lack of prowess. This is an excellent song to play at a party if you want to clear out people in a hurry. If that fails, the next song, “The King And The Sword” will do the trick. Continue with the remaining three songs on the album if your party peeps are stubborn.
The Black Coast is a throwback to the bad old days of poor production, weak song writing and execution. Recommended only for use as a weapon.
