( vote)Back in the day, Marvel Comics had a title called What If…? where they would take an iconic story, set it in an alternate universe, with a drastically different outcome. Unified by Sweet & Lynch, pairs 2 80’s rock icons, Michael Sweet (Stryper, Boston) and George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob) in a cosmic 80s What If..? scenario. What if George Lynch had been the guitarist for Stryper? What if Michael Sweet had been the vocalist for Lynch Mob? Both are answered on Unified.
Michael Sweet is in fine form, both in replicating his soaring high notes and stacked harmonies from the heyday of Stryper as in “Walk”, the chorus taken from the bible, and embracing the gritty, blue infused rock swagger of some very Lynch Mob influenced tracks. “Afterlife” and “Better Man” in particular, sound very Lynch Mob. George Lynch brings both the fiery playing of his early days, along with his newly cultivated laid back blues influence, tastefully executed throughout Unified. Each track represents an effective melding of the two very influential artists. Even though at first it seems like an unlikely pairing, it comes off well.
Fans of Stryper and George Lynch will be very pleased with the outcome. The band is a supergroup of sorts, featuring Sweet, Lynch, James LoMenzo (White Lion, Megadeth, Lynch Mob) on bass and Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Lynch Mob) on drums round out the lineup, giving Unified some serious star power and musicianship. 80s Rock fans should definitely check this out.
