( vote)Beyond The Human Mind is the second record from Brazilian Power Metal band Vandroya; the follow up release to 2012’s One. While remaining clearly influenced by their Power Metal roots, Vandroya depart somewhat from the typical formula. The keyboards are downplayed in favor of a more driving guitar sound, and at times a very Progressive Metal mojo. The title track “Beyond The Human Mind“ comes in an a whopping 11:10, and features very syncopated rhythms and numerous melodic shifts that call to mind early Dream Theater. The band really shines on the songs that stick closer to the Power Metal genre. “The Path To The Endless Fall” is a high speed Power Metal gallop, with Daisa Munhoz melodic vocals leading the charge.
The guitarists, Marco Lambert and Radolfo Pagotta, borrow influences from across the metal kingdom, from Iron Maiden-esque gallops to Helloween inspired leads. The solo work is generally great, with a highlight in “The Path To The Endless Fall”. It is a somewhat simple sound, but far more complex structure and undertones. Giovani Perlatti, Bass and Ottavio Nunez, drums, round out Vandroya’s rhythm section and turn in excellent performances. The bass shines particularly in the song “Maya”. Fans of both Power Metal and Progressive Metal will find something to enjoy in Beyond The Human Mind, but the record will leave something to be desired from each. While not every song is a winner, there is definitely enough good here to be worth a listen.
