( votes)World War X, the new release from JD Miller, is an ear pleasing blend of Power Metal and AOR / Melodic Hard Rock. The album features a thick, modern production complete with multi-layered vocals and crushing guitars. Songs tend to be on the heavier side of Hard Rock, and they venture into Metal territory fairly often, which gives World War X an accessible, catchy vibe without sounding too soft. Tracks like “Clouded Minds” and “Against The Wind” blend the different styles well. There’s no question that these are well crafted songs, however, what some would consider to be a strength of the album, may actually be the limiting factor of its success. The production is so modern, processed, and by-the-numbers that the songs end up sounding too similar. Also, the level of processing on the vocals is heavy enough that it may be a turn off to the more Old School Metal and Rock fans. The brick walled compression used on the drums is very noticeable on the cymbals and the hi hat, and gives the tracks a sterile and inorganic sound.
Despite these production drawbacks, fans of a more Modern Metal sound will likely still enjoy the songs.
