( vote)Beyond The Fight, from Vescera, veteran Metal vocalist Mike Vescera’s solo project turned new band, is a no-nonsense Heavy Metal album which draws on his roots in Obsession, Loudness and Yngwie. The 9 tracks of mostly up-tempo, guitar driven songs feature Vescera’s now signature sound with biting guitars and multi-layered vocal harmonies. Fans of his previous work in the aforementioned bands as well as Reign Of Terror and Animetal USA will enjoy this album, yet this release doesn’t quite reach the heights of some of his earlier efforts. The production on Beyond The Fight is good, but not great, with a noticeable absence of low-end power and bass frequencies.
There is also the vocal production technique which has appeared on most Mike Vescera related albums since 2011, which features heavily layered, sometimes artificial sounding harmonies. Some listeners may enjoy this, but fans of his ’80s and ’90s era work may be put off by it. There are some who speculate that this signature sound is characteristic of pitch correction software, which some music industry members feel has a tendency to remove the character and grit from vocal performances, leaving a too-polished sounding, clinical vocal delivery.
Regardless of these production elements, the songs and performances here are very good and hardcore Mike Vescera fans will no doubt enjoy this release.
Highlights include “Blackout In Paradise”, “Stand And Fight”, “Vendetta” and “Suite 95”.
