TROUBLED HORSE – Revolution On Repeat

Revolution On Repeat is the first album in five years from Sweden’s Troubled Horse, but there are no signs of rust on either the band or any of the ten Hard Rock/Hard Psych tracks they’ve laid down. The well-named opener “Hurricane” kicks off with a cyclone of drums and flurry of guitars, effectively establishing a fast-boogie pacing that would be as appealing to fans of late ’60s and ’70s Heavy Rock as well as their modern torchbearers like Rival Sons. With Revolution, the band presents a specific worldview of humanity that comes across clearly in song titles like “The Filthy Ones”, “Which Way To The Mob”, “Peasants”, and “Let Bastards Know”, not to mention a cover of Warren Zevon’s look-death-in-the-eye song “My Shit’s Fucked Up”, but thankfully the songs display an exuberance belied by these titles. The songs move, and they’ll move the listener, both through the many interesting tempo changes and in the lyrical messages they convey.

“Peasants” and “Let Bastards Know” are over and done in under three minutes; when singer Martin Heppich screams “Do you feel like you fit in?” near the end of “Peasants”, you may feel like he and the band are asking you to make a choice. Other well-placed details like the call and response, hooky twin guitar work (actually funky on “Let Bastards Know”!), a locked-in rhythm section, violins on the last track “Bleeding”, and strong vocal performances throughout make Revolution On Repeat an easy choice to make.
