( votes)Redemption is the 12th release from the USA-based band Hydrogyn. This record marks their first effort with new label High Vol Music, and new lead vocalist Erica Parrott. Redemption features 9 hard-rocking Metal tunes, featuring the title track, “My Redemption” and “Tailspin” as its strongest offerings, and the acoustic track “Jenny” rounds out the album’s 10 songs. Redemption kicks off with the track “Fixir”, however, it struggles to find its tempo and key vocally. The first few tracks are plagued by pitchy vocals, timing issues, and production quality reminiscent of Shout At The Devil by Motley Crue.
The flaws are minor, but it just has a dissonance to it that perhaps is intentional and for effect, but can leave the listener with the impression that something is just … off. “Jenny”, for example, has a lo-fi sound and pitch detune on the intro– it slowly fades into a decent mix, but leaves half the track sounding off. “My Redemption”, “Tailspin”, and “Suffering” are much better mixes and tracks, and they sound better produced than the rest of the album despite a few issues. The final tracks descend back into the same quality as the first, leaving the listener wondering if a different studio or producer was used for the three standout songs. Parrott’s voice is very good, and the musicians are very talented. Redemption just needed more time and polish invested to be the record it could have been.
