( vote)Canada’s Annihilator is one of those bands that has some outstanding music to their credit, but never totally cracked mainstream Thrash acceptance throughout the world. Metal/Thrash enthusiasts generally hold an immense amount of respect for the band’s accomplishments, creativity, and virtuosity, but Annihilator has surprisingly remained a rather long distance from the Big 4 of Thrash, if not even the Top 10. Nonetheless, the band has knocked out an original form of Progressive Thrash for 3 decades … and for those unfamiliar with the band, Triple Threat offers a golden chance to get to know them better.
The release is entitled Triple Threat because it contains a live CD of their 2016 performance at the Bang Your Head festival, a live DVD, and an acoustic/unplugged CD of 10 band favorites. By and large the live CD is average … nothing mind blowing or revealing that will change your perception of the band. However, the acoustic CD is a totally different story. The 10 tracks chosen in an unplugged setting is indeed a treat, if not sometimes odd and bizarre. Those familiar with Annihilator song topics know they are apt to pull no punches, so their direct and aggressive lyrics in an unplugged setting causes you to take notice. Additionally, Waters’ guitar virtuosity is amazingly apparent throughout this CD … worth the price of the package in and of itself.
