( vote)Machine Messiah, the 14th studio album from Brazilian legends Sepultura, offers the eclectic mix of styles, influential Metal elements and heaviness for which the band is known and loved. While the release is considered somewhat of a concept album, the songs stand well on their own and the overall disc is not overly lengthy or tedious. Only the song order and track transitions suffer from the influence of the concept album mentality.
Machine Messiah finds long-time vocalist Derrick Green in familiar growling territory and he seems to be in fine form as does guitarist Andreas Kisser whose creativity continues to find new forms of expression, most notably on the instrumental track “Iceberg Dances”. Sepultura is a band that continues to endure and provide inspiration to a plethora of aspiring artists, despite never being quite accessible enough to break into the mainstream. Machine Messiah, although not their greatest effort, is a proud accomplishment for a band as well seasoned as they are.
Highlights include, “Phantom Self”, “I Am The Enemy” and “Iceberg Dances”.
