INIRE – Cauchemar

Winter is coming, and few can tough it out like the Canadians. After a seven-year frost, Quebec metalists Inire are thawing out with their second release, Cauchemar. Inire have tagged themselves as Southern Metal. Looking past their Canadian origin, a lot of Pantera influence is heard and holds up that claim.

The album starts with a soothing intro, driving straight into tracks of Hardcore scream and aggression with Melodic Metal weaving into the mix. This continues until another tranquil track, “Lord Of The Flies”, delivers French monologue with a Bear McCreary background sample. A soothing filler track breaks the tension for a third time, and the record rounds out at thirteen songs.

This album hits the mark with its raw power, so the soft breaks can feel uncharacteristic. However, they do well in keeping the songs from running together. Cauchemar—French for “nightmare”—is a good second album; not a bad dream at all. It will wake you up with something enjoyably profane, loud, and in-your-face.
