With 16 years in the business, the American Mathcore band The Dillinger Escape Plan are already considered veterans, not only within the genre, but in Metal in general. The band has taken their sweet time to write music through the years and with intervals of at least three years between each album, this year’s One Of Us Is The Killer is only the band’s fifth album thus far.
The fact that this was a Sunday (and people were probably going to work or school the next day) didn’t put any restraints on either the band or the crowd. From the moment vocalist Greg Puciato shouted “How could it all be” that opened the song “Prancer” from their new record, the crowd went wild and the intensity both on and off stage remained throughout the concert.
After “Prancer,” they launched into songs off all of their albums. Especially welcome were “Farewell, Mona Lisa” off 2010’s Option Paralysis and “Milk Lizard” off 2007’s Ire Works. Great songs with great intensity delivered with surgical precision … and that’s the thing about The Dillinger Escape Plan. They give it all on stage and still play brutally technical music; and they nail it! For instance, guitarist Ben Weinman ran around constantly, jumped into the audience, climbed the bass amp and literally spent more time off the stage floor than on it — and all the time he nailed technical solos and odd-metered time signatures like it was nothing.
Towards the end of the set the crowd was treated to a bunch of songs off the new album. This put more variation into the set; from the bone crushing “Hero Of The Soviet Union” to “One Of Us Is The Killer,” the song that is probably as close to a ballad as The Dillinger Escape Plan will ever come, to the almost Doom Metal like feel of “Crossburner.”
The encore consisted of an old crowd-pleaser; Aphex Twin’s “Come to Daddy” that The Dillinger Escape Plan covered for their 2002 EP Irony Is A Dead Scene, “Sunshine The Werewolf” off 2004’s Miss Machine, and of course “43% Burnt” off their 1999 debut album Calculating Infinity.
There are lots of energetic bands out there, but few of them can hold the same level as The Dillinger Escape Plan. If you’re looking for the most intense Rock show of the year, you need to go see them live now!
