What can be said about Duff McKagan? He is probably one of the better known bassists in Rock ‘n’ Roll to date because of his work with Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver. However, in recent years he is noted for his awesome guitar work and vocal stylings in his own band: Loaded. The band’s recent release The Taking might well take on a life of its own as Duff himself describes the effort as “The closest thing to a ‘concept’ record that I have ever been involved with. Pain, loss, triumph, redemption. Life. Bring it.”

The Taking offers 12 songs… the first being “Lords Of Abaddon”, which is unlike any other song and is quite indescribable at that, but absolutely in a good way. This is pretty heavy stuff, and there’s this cool guitar bit in the midst of it all, which provides plenty of ear candy. “Dead Skin”, the third song is Rock, but there’s some Punk there too. “We Win” is a winner and again Duff’s voice adds a Punk element that fits nicely throughout the album. This is original work; not in the littlest bit repeated, but the album’s style will likely be repeated by others — the truest compliment that could ever be paid to an artist. “Indian Summer”, “She’s An Anchor”, and “Cocaine” are the absolute best of all of the twelve aside from “We Win”, which is sure to be the most memorable from The Taking.

The Taking, in addition to being a totally sick album, (incidentally, the name of their last album was called Sick), is set to be a feature length film as well that is due out this summer. The film will be in the same vain as The Beatles A Hard Day’s Night, mixed with a little The Song Remains The Same from Led Zeppelin.
