INCITE – The Slaughter

Whoever is familiar with Soulfly, and in particular the Cavalera Conspiracy, has probably heard the name of Max’s son, Richie Cavalera, who has also shared the stage beside his father.

Well, these appearances were not just simple occasions since Max’s son has put together a Metal band named Incite. So, The Slaughter is the band’s prime release and it is not a great discovery to say that this album breathes the Soulfly groove with some mainstream finishing touches.

Indeed, The Slaughter shares the same energetic attitude with Soulfly paying great respect to the Thrash profile and slightly sets foot on the Metalcore scene. The latter is accomplished through the screaming vocals that fortunately are gravely influenced from Max’s killing-throat style. Actually, this is the one and only characteristic that manages to put Incite a safe distance from the ‘core’ movement by enhancing the hearty Thrash profile.

The songs are riff based leaving little space for soloing and hence pay the proper respect to Slayer and -in some extent- to the Swedish melodic Death Metal genre. The listener ‘feels’ that the guitar work is responsible for bringing Incite closer to the Thrash scene having, as a powerful ally, the compact drumming. The perfect example to the latter is “Rage”; among the fast grooves the lead guitar shines laying down some early The Haunted phrases uncovering the underlying melodic structures giving a great reason to headbang. Songs like “Divided We Fail,” the fast “Down And Out” or the in-your-face “Awakening” are simply outlets for all the energy stored while in proximity to Soulfly’s whereabouts and on-stage activities.

The in-your-face attitude of The Slaughter leaves no space for further commenting. The album is packed with energy taking full advantage the experience gained through Richie’s time with Soulfly. Of course, there is room for developing in case the band decides to work more on the very good guitars that seem to have the potentials to make Incite a full time Thrash band!
