Since forming in 2013, Swedish doom metal band Avatarium have continued to push their musical boundaries with every consecutive album, choosing never to repeat the same approach twice. Led by vocalist Jennie-Ann Smith and guitarist Marcus Jidell, Avatarium are no traditional doom metal band, as they blend different styles together to create a sound that casual listeners wouldn’t expect. Besides the obvious influences of Tony Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore, Smith comes from a jazz background, adding a soulful vibe to the band’s music. Lyrically, they express curiosity about the meaning of life and what happens when it’s time to leave Earth. With six studio albums under their belt, Avatarium plan to play some European shows and festivals in the near future.
Lana Teramae of Metal Express Radio had a chat with guitarist Marcus Jidell from Avatarium about the band’s latest album, Between You, God, the Devil and the Dead. They also talked about the story behind “Being With the Dead,” how he balances family and his career, his music influences, the possibility of another Avatarium studio album, and more.
