When a few elite musicians originating from some of Metal’s finest acts decide to come together as one, there is always great anticipation and enthusiasm among the Rock-loving crowd. While the world is being bombarded with Pop Idols — like Reality TV shows such as Rockstar Supernova, VH1 Supergroup or Rockstar INXS, the time for a more realistic and down-to-earth approach to a Supergroup-style project has become long overdue.

3 Legged Dogg is exactly all about such an approach, and this is probably why they are causing a stir of excitement throughout the Metal scene right now. Real down to earth Metal musicians that are doing what they do best. There are plenty of reasons to be excited about this band because their debut album Frozen Summer boasts nothing less than a serious Supergroup line-up featuring Chas West (Bonham, Lynch Mob) on vocals, Carlos Cavazo (Quiet Riot) and Brian Young (David Lee Roth) on guitar, Jimmy Bain (Rainbow, Dio) on bass, and Vinny Appice (Dio, Ozzy, Black Sabbath) on drums. This new powerhouse band was formed by Dio bandmates Jimmy Bain and Vinny Appice and can be considered a band whose combined members have sold over 15 million records!

Musically speaking, the album rocks hard and sounds fresh, crossing various styles without necessarily entering new compositional spheres. Classic Hard Rock fans will enjoy several tracks, especially “Wasted Life” and “Left For Dead,” and for those looking for more modern arrangements, songs like the title track “Frozen Summer” and “Long Way Back From Hell” will deliver the goods, while the latter offers some great riffs and interesting passages and can be considered one of the best tracks. Other highlights include the half-ballad “Rain On My Parade” and the stunning “One Good Reason.”

One of the shortcomings of Frozen Summer is the fact that there are only 8 tracks on this CD, which despite the fact that it makes one certainly hungry for more, it is somewhat of a disappointment. In general, Frozen Summer grooves consistently and also reminds what a tight and long-proven rhythm section Bain/Appice are. Chas’ vocal performance is sharp and solid throughout the CD. Friends of Old School Metal will embrace Frozen Summer without a doubt.

Frankie was a reviewer here at Metal Express Radio, based out of Cape Town, South Africa. He was born and raised near Stuttgart in Germany, and at the age of 15 he played in his first band. He went on and took professional vocal training lessons and also played the drums. He first got into Hard Rock and Metal at age 12 when his friend and him secretly sneaked into his older sister’s room and browsed through her vinyl collection and bumped into Deep Purple’s Made In Japan. He turned into a complete Scorpions fan throughout most of his teen years, but also had huge aspirations for Rainbow, Dio, and loved most of the 80s a lot. He was one of the founding members/vocalist/songwriter for the Balingen-based Hard Rock band Deadlock. After his band broke up, he recorded a solo album, Frankie’s Playground, which was produced by Tommy Newton and featured some great Metal musicians such as Tore Østby (Conception, Ark) and others. He also runs his own record label, Riester International Records.
