Mr. Bungle and Melvins, just hearing those two names together at one show, you know your in for something special, and it sure was. This show was Hard, Heavy and a bit Strange, just the way I like it.
The Melvins took the stage first and was welcomed by a energetic crowd waiting for that first guitar cord and drum beat. Going back 20 years and opening their set with “Snake Appeal”, Buzz, Dale and Steven were in top form.
As with this show, and every Melvins show, there are no breaks in between songs, powering right in to “Zodiac”and “Copache” turning the heat up in the pit to Full Boil. Their set also included, “Evil New War God”, “Honey Bucket”, “Revolve” and the deep sound of “Night Goat”.
Up next, Mr Bungle. The last time I got to see them perform was back in 2020, and as I wrote in my review then, “It was a little strange watching a livestream concert rather than attending in person, but many times I found myself wanting to get up and start a 1 man mosh pit in my living room”. This time it was the Real Deal.
Mike Patton walked to the front of the stage, eyeing the crowd with great delight. The Mr. Bungle Geek Show 2023 was about to commence. “Bungle Grind”, “Eracist” and “Spreading the Thighs of Death” started their set, you could tell where this night was headed.
The night also included songs “Hypocrites”, “Methematics” and “Raping Your Mind” and well as a few covers “Loss for Words” (Corrosion of Conformity), “Hell Awaits” (Slayer), and “Territory” (Sepultura).
The night ended the way I think only Mr Bungle could do with “My Ass Is On Fire”. It was more than just the music, it was a visual experience that will stick in your mind for a long time.
We may never see these two great bands take the same stage on the same night again. Grab your tickets now.
