This Friday’s Guest DJs: WITNESSES

NYC based Witnesses was established in 2016 with the release of the haunting cinematic ambient I. By 2019, the project had already expanded into new territory with To disappear and to be nothing – a deeply personal album that drew influence from classic British doom metal, but with elements often described by fans and writers as post-metal.

Since then, Witnesses has continued down this mainly two-track approach of ambient and metal releases, with ambient follow ups IIIII, and IV, and doom full-length albums Doom II and The Collapse.

Thematically, Witnesses alternates between stories and introspective lyrics, sometimes blending the two together. The band incorporates a highly textural combination of powerful metal rhythms, progressive leads, intricate melodies, and emotive vocals, into their atmospheric sound. Their brand new album Joy focuses on themes of spiritual and intellectual freedom, traversed through enthralling arrangements and enveloping shrouds of vast and intense soundscapes. Joy was released November 8th

On the Guest DJ Show this Friday, Greg Schwan (guitar, bass guitar, keys, lyrics) will play ten of his influential/favorite tracks. After his playlist, we’ll play a block of music from that new Witnesses album Joy!

In fact, running Metal Express Radio takes almost all of his time. Is it worth it...? "Most times, yes," Stig says. "My philosophy is to try to give all Metal releases a fair chance to get promoted in one way or another. As you can imagine, it can be an arduous task to listen through about 20 albums every week! Still, I know we have the best METAL dedicated radio on this planet, and that is a reward in and of itself. I hope one day the whole Metal community can and will make listening to Metal Express Radio part of their daily rituals! Yeah, right..."
