( vote)In early 2023, Steph Honde (Hollywood Monsters, Scream Taker, Sunroad) and Brazilian composer and drummer Fred Mika (also of Sunroad) decided to form a parallel band focusing on Melodic Hard Rock, but also incorporating some ’70s influences. Next, Fred Mika recruited his friend, Michael Voss (Michael Schenker Group, Mad Max, Casanova) to play bass guitar. The obvious choice for second guitar and keyboards was Steve Mann (Eloy, Lionheart, MSG). Vocals were originally Robin McAuley, but due to to his commitments with MSG, he had to bow out, leaving room for Mark Boals (Yngwie Malmsteen, Ring Of Fire, Uli Jon Roth) to complete the lineup, and Earth Lux was born!
Blast From The Past
Earth Lux songs all sound familiar, taking their feel from mostly 80s Melodic Heavy Metal, and given the relationship with band members to the Michal Schenker Group, it’s no surprise. Mark Boals still has the voice that brought him to fame with Yngwie Malmsteen back in the day, and he’s the perfect fit for the band’s sound and style. Melody, and simple songwriting are the essence of Earth Lux, all tightly arranged and performed.
Final Notes
It feels like the mix is a little distorted on certain songs, and maybe that was intentional. Overall, it’s a strong album for the genre, with a who’s who of talented players coming together to make a good record. While Earth Lux hasn’t broke any new ground, they have put together a nice bunch of songs that Melodic Metal Fans will like.
