Up and coming Metal band Flat Black are set to release their debut album entitled Dark Side of The Brain on July 19th. The band’s vocalist Wrex Horton took the time to talk with Metal Express Radio about their upcoming album, the formation of the band, working with Corey Taylor, and more. Check out the chat below!

Metal Express Radio: How did the formation of the band come about?

Horton: Jason began working on material for Flat Black shortly following departing his last band and there was a long search for a singer. Eventually we met through a mutual friend I met while I briefly played bass in Falling in Reverse (shout out Katie Nystrom!), quickly hit it off and got to work. As for the other guys, Rob, the drummer came from touring with a bunch of punk bands, notably Strung Out, and Nick, the bass player came from a decade of touring with his metal band All Hail the Yeti.

MER: Your debut album entitled Dark Side of The Brain is set to be released on July 19th, what can you tell fans about the upcoming release?

Horton: There’s really something for everyone on this record. If you like heavy stuff, it’s got some of that. If you want to sing along to a catchy chorus, that’s all over the place. Might even shed some tears if you listen to the words real close on songs like “Home” and “Tidal Wave”. There’s songs my mom likes and there’s songs even the arm crossed death metal dudes can bang their heads to. I think you’re gonna love it.

MER: How was it writing and recording as a band for the first time?

Horton: There were certainly challenges that really only come with all of us wanting to get the best possible end product, but generally speaking it went really smooth. We all get along really well and I think there’s few aspects more important than that when it comes to being in a band. It was fun and really exciting hearing how cool the songs were at every step of the process.

MER: How was it working with Corey Taylor on your single entitled “Nothing To Some”?

Horton: Definitely a cool bucket list moment for me! I grew up on the Knot and I think we were all really grateful for the opportunity to work with Corey. He’s been nothing but kind to us and it’s awesome to have him on our first collaboration ever.

MER: Since your band’s formation, you’ve played a lot of big festivals and have supported big names, how has it been moving at a somewhat fast pace?

Horton: Oh I think we are all stoked and ready for it. We all have experience touring and years under our belt playing music. We’re ready for it. Everyone’s excited and prepared. We got our heads on straight and it’s time to make it happen.

MER: What do you see as plans for you and your band after the album release?

Horton: We want to take the live show everywhere we can and meet all the fans all over the world. Can’t say anything too definitive but I’m expecting quite a busy year to say the least.

MER: Who do you hope to tour with and why?

Horton: We are all excited to tour with Godsmack and NOTHING MORE this summer/fall but my subjective personal answer is probably Killswitch Engage, they have been my favorite band since I was like 15! Also been super into Jelly Roll lately, I think that would be sick too.

MER: Do you feel fans of your previous bands will also be into Flat Black?

Horton: Yeah definitely. I think Jason’s attention to detail in terms of the priority being writing incredible songs really comes through. Our sort of specialized skills are touched through the record/live show, I come from a sort of technical death metal background with vocals, Rob can play double bass at like 500 MPH, Nick is a great singer and keeps right up with Jason on bass. I think there’s little touches of all our personalities and individual interests. These songs get stuck in your head and maintain our identities which is unique for sure.

MER: What are your hopes for your band’s future?

Horton: I want to do it all. This is my dream and for the other guys it’s theirs too. We are all on the same page and we all want to take this as far as it can possibly go and meet as many fans as we can. Those are the most special moments to me, these fans are giving you sometimes their only day off for the month, maybe months, it’s incredible to see how powerful giving them a good show and meet and greet moments is for them. Especially young kids, they never forget those moments. I want to give that to as many people as I can while I still got time left on earth.
