Australian Metalcore veterans In Hearts Wake are set to release their sixth studio album entitled Incarnation on July 12th. The band’s guitarist Ben Nairne took the time to talk with Metal Express Radio about their upcoming album, their upcoming North American tour with Miss May I, the music scene in Australia, and more. Check out the chat below!

Metal Express Radio: Your band, In Hearts Wake, are set to release their new album entitled Incarnation on July 12th, what can you tell fans about the upcoming release?

Nairne: I’d say it’s definitely our heaviest and most intense record to date. We wanted this record to be relentless from start to finish to keep the listener on their toes.

MER: How was the writing and recording process having this being your band’s sixth album?

Nairne: The writing and recording process for this one was a little different from past albums as Kyle was finishing his journey with the band. We had to find new ways to introduce melody and different voices on the record and it really made us think in a more creative way which produced some really heavy and interesting sounds.

MER: How did the album’s concept involving Tarot cards come about?

Nairne: Our first album Divination used the first 11 cards of the Major Arcana so we’ve come full circle and we’re finishing off the cycle with the second 11 cards. Jake’s mom is actually a Tarot card reader so this is where he first got the inspiration for Divination.

MER: You recently just released a song entitled “Hollow Bone,” what kind of feedback have you received?

Nairne: This is the first song we’ve released as a 4 piece without Kyle so it was definitely a little bit daunting going into release week but the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s the first time we’ve used all of our voices on a chorus with melody so it’s nice to see that people are enjoying the change up.

MER: What do you see as plans for you and your band after the album release?

Nairne: We’ve got an Australian Tour in September for the album release and then we head over to the US with Miss May I in October. Covid really slowed things down for us and we’ve been waiting to get back to international touring with a new record campaign so we’ll definitely be looking to get back over to Europe some time next year too.

MER: Who do you hope to tour with and why?

Nairne:
I don’t think there’s anyone in particular that we’d like to tour with but we’re just really looking forward to getting back out on the road with old friends and making new ones along the way. We’d definitely love to play some European festivals!

MER: Is there anywhere you hope to play live that you haven’t yet and why?

Nairne: We’d love to play in South America. We’ve never been there before and the shows look pretty crazy over there. We’d definitely book in some extra days off to do some adventuring too!

MER: Is there anywhere that’s your favorite to play live and why?

Nairne: That’s a really tough question! It’s really nice playing shows in places we’re you’re not really sure what to expect but the show turns out to be wild. Prague and Budapest definitely come to mind, we’ve definitely had some crazy shows in both those places.

MER: How would you describe the music scene in Australia?

Nairne: The heavy music scene in Australia is great. Lots of bands supporting each other and there’s always lots of familiar faces in the crowd. We’ve been touring Australia for a long time and we’re so lucky to have continued love and support over the years.

MER: How is it playing in Australia versus other parts of the world?

Nairne: It’s definitely different playing in Australia just because we play our biggest headline shows there and it’s always comforting having friends and family at shows. Touring in other parts of the world is really exciting for us because we get to go places that we only ever dreamed of playing and we get to meet a lot of new people.

MER: Out of your band’s six albums, which one would you suggest to a new fan and why?

Nairne: I’d say our newest record Incarnation is what people need to be looking out for. It’s the perfect combination of our heavier roots mixed with some experimental sounds and a lot of fun stuff in there too.
