GREG WILKINSON (STATIC ABYSS, AUTOPSY): “On A Personal Level I Am Proud Of What We Came Up With”

Greg Wilkinson

Death/Doom Metal band Static Abyss are set to release their second full length album entitled Aborted from Reality on June 30th. Greg Wilkinson, who performs both guitar and bass for Static Abyss, took the time to talk with Metal Express Radio about their upcoming album, balancing his other bands (Autopsy, Deathgrave, Earhammer), his favorite albums of 2023 so far, and more. Check out the chat below!

Metal Express Radio: Static Abyss’s second album entitled Aborted from Reality is set to be released on June 30th, what can you tell fans about the upcoming release?

Wilkinson: This shit is a lot noisier and chaotic than the previous release. On a personal level, I am proud of what we came up with.

MER: How was the writing and recording process having this being the second album from your band?

Wilkinson: Honestly, the process was a lot quicker and easier for this release. Most of the songs I wrote and structured before showing Chris. Tracking the drums at Earhammer this time was also a lot quicker to set up and record since I know the room like the back of my hand. Finally, having done a few records together within a year and a half of each other really helped build a creative chemistry between the two of us. I think both of us kind of knew what we wanted to do for this album and how to achieve it unlike our first one which was a result of writing and jamming on the spot.

MER: You released a single from the new album entitled “Wormskinned,” what kind of feedback have you received?

Wilkinson: So far it’s been positive!

MER: What do you see as plans for you and your band after the album release?

Wilkinson: Once things slow down, I hope to begin the writing process for a new one. It being for a third album, I do not feel there is a rush to complete it.

MER: Do you see Static Abyss going on tour this year?

Wilkinson: No. Between Autopsy, Deathgrave and Earhammer’s schedule, there will be no time for us to tour.

MER: Who would you hope to tour with and why?

Wilkinson: Oooooh. That is a good question. It’s too much of a theory to even go there right now.

MER: What have been some of your favorite releases from 2023 so far?

Wilkinson: Having finished up so many albums this year, I have yet to see too many new albums this year aside from Ascended Dead (Evenfall of the Apocalypse), Deiquisitor (Apotheosis), & Hyperdontia (Deranged) which are all killer. I’m still processing ’22 which these all had a heavy rotation for me: Voivod (Synchro Anarchy), Immolation (Acts of God), Mortuous (Upon Desolation), Skullshitter (Goat Claw), Acephalix (Theothanatology) to name a few.

MER: Do you feel fans of your previous band Autopsy will also enjoy Static Abyss?

Wilkinson: I believe so as long as you aren’t expecting a carbon copy of Autopsy. Static Abyss has its own sound, but we are still playing Death Metal. Chris is still writing the lyrics and doing all the vocals.

MER: How would you describe similarities and differences between Static Abyss and Autopsy?

Wilkinson: Similarities: Chris plays drums and sings. Our music & production is nasty and goes for the throat. There is a strong focus on the rhythm section while giving room for lead sections. Differences: The drums are paired down to a 5 piece set / single kick pedal. The guitar work is violently ethereal in lieu of epic solos giving us a more stripped down feel. Rhythm track sections, solo sections & vocal sections tend to overlap each other quite frequently giving the music a sense of cacophony.
