Boston Metal band Gozu are set to release their fifth studio album entitled Remedy on May 19th via Metal Blade. Gozu’s vocalist/guitarist Marc Gaffney took the time to talk with Metal Express Radio about their upcoming album, who he hopes to tour with, plans for 2023, and more. Check out the chat below!

Metal Express Radio: Gozu’s fifth studio album entitled Remedy is set to be released on May 19th via Metal Blade, what can you tell fans about the upcoming release?

Gaffney: It’s our heaviest and most melodic album so far. Walls of guitars, drums, girl please, bass, how low can you go. If you enjoy moving to the music and going 80 mph in a 25, get this album!

MER: What was the writing and recording process like being Gozu’s fifth album?

Gaffney: Doug and I had been writing and emailing each other tunes. We had a good amount and picked the ones we felt the best about. Seth came in and brought a spark that needed to light, and Kapow! You ready? You ready? Let’s get it on. Recording this album was the best I have been a part of. Working with Dean Baltulonis is a slice of Heaven with a side of BGV’s. We knew what we wanted the album to sound like and every member killed it. This was the most vocal all the boys were in regards to throwing out ideas. Guess what? The ideas worked! Drums were done in 1.5 days, started guitars on the second day and away we went.

MER: How would you compare Remedy to your previous four albums?

Gaffney: Remedy is heavier, grooves the hardest and sounds huge. I enjoy all our albums and we play songs live from each of them. However, this album really showed off many different influences, sonically and melodic. It started off so positively that the only place to go was up, up and away, in my beautiful balloon. There was a true team effort from everyone involved and the aid of delicious CLDZ easing any worried minds.

MER: You recently released a song from Remedy entitled “Tom Cruise Control,” what kind of feedback have you received?

Gaffney: The feedback has been really positive. I tend to be a bit critical of everything I do, so I am really happy with its reception. Tom will most likely use it in his next movie or as a dance aid for his new Zumba documentary titled, “Zumba, so glad I knew ya! Pass the Rice Krispy Treats.”

MER: Do you feel “Tom Cruise Control” gives fans an idea on what to expect from the full album?

Gaffney: Most def. It encapsulates the sound, flow and energy of the album. A famous music writer said, “Gozu’s “Tom Cruise Control” makes me want to buy slacks at Talbots, eat wings and drop it like it’s hot! Hot hot heat!”

MER: What do you see as plans for you and the rest of the band for 2023?

Gaffney: We go on tour starting May 19, day the album drops until June 10. We want to get back to Europe and Joe is looking at starting a deep sea fishing charter company, “Let’s get Reeeeel!”

MER: Who do you hope to tour with that you haven’t yet and why?

Gaffney: Sleep, Mastodon, Clutch. Those bands are absolutely amazing and are huge influences on the 4 of us. They embody hard work, knee jerks, and twerks. To play with any of those bands would be a proper delight and make the world right.

MER: For anyone that’s unfamiliar with Gozu, how would you describe your sound?

Gaffney: Our sound is heavy, melodic music, made for the soul by the soul. Hard hitting, pant splitting music that allows you to be bad and good, all in one sitting.

MER: Out of Gozu’s five albums, what is one you would suggest to a new fan and why?

Gaffney: I would get Locust Season as that was out first, then Remedy so people can witness the Alpha and the Omega.
