The Openers
It was a warm Friday night in Portland, Oregon at The Bossanova Ballroom, with 3 great bands turning it up a notch and kicking ass on stage. The Dead Daisies were headlining, with special guests Enuff Z’Nuff supporting the tour, and local favorites R.A.R. opening the show. R.A.R. packed a punch with their opener “Medicated” off of the Dig album, getting the crowd fired up. Frontman Robert Anthony Robinson was electrifying as he lead his band through their set featuring songs from their new album Truth. While their set was short, it was inspiring as the audience pushed towards the stage.
The Supporting Act
Next up was Blue Island, Illinois Glam Rockers who’ve been at it since 1984: Enuff Z’Nuff lead by founder/lead singer/bass player Chip Z’Nuff. The opening track showed their love of The Beatles, as they kicked off their set with “Magical Mystery Tour.” The vocal harmonies were sublime, with the set being a mix of originals and more Paul McCartney songs. The Stand out tracks for this reviewer were in fact “Jet” from Paul McCartney and a very Heavy Metal take on “Elenore Rigby.”
The Headliners
The Dead Daisies were more than worth the wait. While it was disappointing that legend Glenn Hughes was out due to Covid, the band never lets anything prevent the show from going on. Filling in for Glenn Hughes is a big job, so having 2 people cover for him worked perfectly with vocalist Dino Jelusić (Whitesnake, Dirty Shirley, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and bassist Yogi Lonich making it more than work.
The audience was treated to several songs off of the new album Radiance, as well as some super covers that blew the crowd away. When the band went into the deep Purple classic “Mistreated” the audience went wild, as Dino Jelusić was indistinguishable from David Coverdale’s original vocals. Brian Tichy gave us a real treat as he sang on Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re an American Band”. The final encore was a fantastic rendition of Deep Purple’s classic “Burn”, with Jelusić changing his voice to sound like both Hughes and Coverdale.
The incredible playing of Doug Aldrich and founder David Lowy on guitars was captivating, leaving everyone wanting more. Overall, this was a fantastic show by all three bands, and this reviewer for one can’t wait to see them all again.
