Up-and-coming Metalcore band Lybica are set to release this debut self titled album via Metal Blade on September 16th. The band’s guitarist Justin Foley, (also drummer of Killswitch Engage) took the time to talk with Metal Express Radio about the band’s debut album, the formation of the band, recording guitar on an album for the first time, and more. Check out the chat below!
Metal Express Radio: How did the formation of the band come about?
Foley: It started as something to do during the pandemic. I’d known Doug and Joey for years, and we always talked about someday playing music together. I sent a few demos to them to see if it was something they’d be interested in, and before long we had a bunch of songs.
MER: The band will be releasing their self-titled debut album via Metal Blade on September 16th, what can you tell fans about the upcoming release?
Foley: We all can’t wait to get this out there. I hope the newness and excitement of a band finding its way comes across. We’re all very proud of the record.
MER: How was it writing and recording together with this group for the first time?
Foley: Since both Doug and I are playing instruments that are relatively new to us, bass and guitar respectively, it was a little scary to be in a studio. But the songs came together fairly quickly and the recording process was easy and fun. Credit Jonathan Nunez with that, he was great to work with.
MER: The band recently released a single from the album entitled “Manifest,” what kind of feedback have you been able to receive so far?
Foley: Seems like people are into it, but the internet means nothing. The real test will come when we play shows. We’ve only had 2 so far, and we’re hoping to get out and play all over the place once the record is out.
MER: Do you feel “Manifest” along with the other two singles released from the band gives fans a good idea on what to expect from the full album?
Foley: Yeah, I think so. There are 9 songs and they definitely don’t sound all the same, so there is a good bit of variety on the record. It’s hard for any couple of songs to represent the band, but a lot of the basic elements are there I feel. “Palatial” brings some spacey stuff, “Ferment” brings in some heavy, and “Oktavist” brings some Metal.
MER: What do you see as plans for the band after the album release?
Foley: Hopefully tons of shows. We want to play for as many people as possible and introduce them to the music. Live music is always the best way to judge what a band is all about.
MER: Is there anyone that you hope to tour with and why?
Foley: Caspian, since they’re my favorite band. I think the Thrice crowd would dig us. But we aren’t picky, we’ll play with anyone. Hopefully we can bring something unique to a bill and fit in with bands from different genres.
MER: What have been some of your favorite releases of 2022 so far?
Foley: Russian Circles – Gnosis, SOM – The Shape Of Everything, Cult of Luna – The Long Road North. I’m listening to the new Pianos Become The Teeth record as I write this and it’s pretty cool too.
MER: What have been some of your all time favorite releases on Metal Blade?
Foley: Both the YOB records they put out, obviously the old Slayer stuff. As I Lay Dying’s An Ocean Between Us is a favorite. Lately, the last Revocation album rips, and I can’t wait for the new one.
MER: What are your hopes for the band’s future?
Foley: Just like everyone else in a band, I want to play lots of shows and get the music in front of as many people as possible. It’s been really fun so far, and I’d love to keep playing and writing and see where this music takes the band.
