From One Icon to Another
It’s not everyday that a viral video turns into a record contract, but when you have a powerful voice that’s similar to a Heavy Metal icon, people are sure to notice. Frontier President Serafino Perugino came across Brazilian singer Raphael Mendes’ video series “What If Bruce Dickinson sang…” and he was so impressed he decided to form a band around Mendes.
That band is Icon of Sin. Their debut self-titled album is set to be released on April 16, 2021. Now, I know what you’re thinking, so put your pre-conceived notions aside. Just because Mendes’ pipes are Dickinson-esque, Icon of Sin is not an Iron Maiden clone. The band is a throw back to classic metal, but manages to carve out their own sound. I had the chance to speak with singer Raphael Mendes ahead of the album’s release.
Highlights Include
- Discussion of their self-titled debut album
- How movies and video games inspired Raphael’s lyrics
- Is Icon of Sin a studio project or do they plan to tour?
- How his viral YouTube videos landed him a record deal
- Does he get any criticism for his vocals sounding like Bruce Dickinson’s?
- Has anyone in Iron Maiden ever commented on his “What if Bruce Dickinson sang….” videos?
- … and much, much more!
