The concert dubbed Existential Reckoning: Live at Arcosanti, featured members Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Carina Round (vocals), Mat Mitchell (guitar/electronics), Greg Edwards (bass/electronics), and Gunnar Olsen (drums). The band dressed in the suits & and dark glasses, dimly lit fog covered risers, pulsating red lights, and the Arizona desert as a backdrop, the stage was set for Puscifer to perform their brand new album in its entirety on October 30th 2020 (the same day Existential Reckoning was released).
The evening began with the song “Bread and Circus”. From the start, and throughout the entire performance, the vocals of both Keenan and Round were exceptional. It was difficult to tell if they were indoors or out outdoors. But as the show went on, and for the closing number, “Bedlamite”, which begins with a beautiful wide screen shot of the band and the sunrise behind them, they were clearly outside under the desert sky.
The song “Apocalyptical” followed. Images of Maynard from the song’s music video appeared on several screens before the entire area lit up, revealing a simple, yet perfect stage, As the show continued with the songs “Underwhelming”, Grey Area 5.1, Theorem and UPGrade, you feel drawn deeper into the experience. Subsequent songs, “Bullet Train To Iowa”, “Personal Prometheus”, “Singularity”, “Postulous” and “Fake Affront” rounded out a perfect presentation.
The show came to a close with the band now in full sunlight and full views of all the instruments, gear, screens, light cranes, and lighting directors, and both singers facing each other silent.
For fans of Puscifer and those who are seeking something different, this show will not disappoint.
