( votes)Michael Denner may be best known for his guitar work in Mercyful Fate and King Diamond, but it’s his love for 70s Hard Rock that’s the driving force behind his band Denner’s Inferno. While traces of his heavier work can still be heard, Denner states “…my love for old Deep Purple, UFO, Jimi Hendrix and my other old heroes…shines through.” Denner also confesses a love for Progressive Rock that he shares with his rhythm section. In Amber reflects this combination of varied tastes.
While the two opening songs are steeped in his 80’s Heavy Metal influences, the remainder are as varied as his influences. “Up And On” dawns with a Melodic Metal flourish before settling into Prog Rock guitar musings supported by a bass line active enough for a Yes song. “Sometimes” is built on a bluesy foundation of roaming riffs that opens the door for the band to color outside the lines. “Pearls On A String” is punctuated with intermittent Prog Rock elements within an Arena Rock structure. It’s interesting, but lacks cohesion. “Run For Cover” and “Loser” are rockers chock full of funk, boogie and blues. Throw in an organ or a slide guitar and you could be listening to Mark III Deep Purple or Foghat, respectively.
While the marketing materials for In Amber state it’s “for all fans of old school heavy and occult rock,” the songs are a better fit for fans of 70s Classic, Hard and Progressive Rock. Fans focused on Denner’s 80s Metal work will need to make an adjustment.
