( vote)Sabaton’s new release, and arguably masterpiece of an album, The Great War is chock full of Heavy Metal ear candy. Although it’s not as heavy as some of their previous material, the irresistibly catchiness of songs like “Seven Pillars Of Wisdom”, “The Attack Of The Dead Men”, “Devil Dogs”, and “Fields Of Verdun”, among others, is enough to drive even the most elitist metal heads to reach for the volume knob and turn it all the way up.
One of the highlights of this excellent album is lead guitarist Tommy Johansson’s contribution. His career is already riding high on the new Majestica release, but now with having his chops so clearly featured on The Great War, his status as a masterful musician will be propelled to even greater heights. Johansson’s lead parts capture the perfect combination of technical fire-power and melodic memorability. All that being said, the entire band is really firing on all cylinders on The Great War. Joakim Brodén sounds as mighty as ever on the mic and his voice combined with the album’s World War I theme makes for the combination of bombast and heartfelt bravado that Sabaton fans have come to know and love.
