( votes)Honing their sound since 2015, the debut album from Nottingham’s three-piece band BlitZ, reflects Guns N’ Roses, Kiss, and Slade influences crossed with Backyard Babies and Velvet Revolver. The band says their sound is a mix of Glam and Classic Rock.
“I Believe” leads sounding more like 80s Pop artist Rick Springfield than a Glam Rock band. The chorus is dead ringer for that of Rick Springfield’s top ten hit “I’ve Done Everything For You.” You can’t miss it. The chorus is mercilessly tagged time and again. Things improve on “Rock City Nights.” It’s a robust anthem with a chorus that doesn’t wear thin. The backing vocals give the lyrics depth resulting in the best song on the album. “Miss America” follows and the backing vocals used during the chorus improve this song as well. However, the chorus isn’t good enough to be repeated as often as it is. In a surprise departure from their standard form, the song finishes with a crunching riff outro reminiscent of the Styx song of the same name. For the remainder of the album, the backing vocals which buoyed the opening songs are largely missing. This is unfortunate as the vocalist doesn’t have the range or tone to carry the load solo. Songs are patterned musically and lyrically in a style familiar to their Glam Rock influences. Unfortunately, these are all lyrics you’ve heard before paired with unremarkable riffs.
BlitZ plays to their strengths of gritty and easily assimilated songs about relationships and the Rock ‘N Roll lifestyle on Welcome To The Rock Show. They will never lack for support gigs with their arsenal of easily digested songs. Aspirations to headline a rock show will remain elusive without improvement to their writing and musicianship.
